Shortly after dusk, Lenore walks into Beecher & Hail's Bookstore. Savoring the scent of paper, glue, and dust that pervades all true bookstores, she peruses the stacks, wandering quietly nearer to the shelves holding fiction. Here, a set of the Narnia books; there, a copy of War of the Worlds, in remarkable condition. Smiling, she continues to explore the shop.
Mackenzie walks into the bookstore, not sure exactly what she is looking for, but knowing that recently she has had more time to devote to her passion of reading. The bookshelves in the house were also not full yet.
Walking slowly through stacks, she sees a familiar face. "Hello, Lenore. How are you this evening?"
Lenore smiles, looking up from a weathered copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula. "Evening, cher. I'm quite well, how about yourself?" She chuckles quietly, holding up the book. "I've been wanting to come here for a while...I'm a bit of a bibliophile."
Mackenzie chuckles at the book Lenore holds up. "It's been a long time since I read that." She continues to walk down the aisle, her hand trailing lightly on the bookshelves, her eyes skimming the titles. "How am I? I am as tight as a bowstring....any moment..." Mackenzie's head whips to lock eyes with Lenore's. "snap."
She stares for a moment and a slight smile crosses her face. "Do not worry, you will be fine." She turns her gaze back to the shelves. "I find that a good book relaxes me. I have read what I have at the house."
Lenore tilts her head, processing the information absentmindedly. It's clear that she has a tendency to lose herself in her reading. "What's your preference, cher? I'm sure between the two of us we can find something."
Lenore walks to a nearby shelf and, after a moment's consideration, gently removes a paperback novel. "Try this...I'm quite fond of this series." She hands the book to Mackenzie; it's a fantasy novel, entitled Furies of Calderon. The author is Jim Butcher, and the cover shows a boy running, sword in hand, through a field, pursued and surrounded by howling creatures of wind and storm. "The entire series is...fabulous. It's high fantasy, but unlike anything else I've read." She smiles. "Will that do for you?"
Mackenzie looks over the book, taking in the cover with a slgihtly raised eyebrow. She shrugs, "Sure, I'll try it." She looks around. "Is your husband off working again? It appears I don't see the two of you together much recently. Is it his job or the lack of friendly company?"
Lenore shrugs. "A bit of both, I think." She smiles again. "Don't worry...like I've said, he's got no problem with you. Shall I let him know you were asking, or is this small talk?"
Mackenzie smiles. "A little of both as well. I understand he is busy, but do let him know I still wish to sit down and talk with he and you soon. I find that there is a lack of communication with people and it is very irritating. I am not referring to you and yours, that was a general comment."
Mackenzie watches Lenore as she is absorbed in the books. "You really should come by the Station again soon. The bookshelves there are getting very full. I'm sure there is something there to strike your fancy as well."
