Memory Lane -- (Lenore ONLY)

Lenore finds herself alone on this rainy, cold night. Such concerns as weather have long since had little impact on the Gangrel, but she still finds herself slightly moved emotionally. The rain darkens her mood, and she retreats into her far-removed past.

She puts on a smile to those she passes; it is obviously fake. As time passes so slowly, her feet lead her back to the start of her time in the city--back to the zoo. Here, she met a few of her clan mates for the first time. Corin. Amanda Winters. Colonel Walker. The smile forming on her lips is real this time. Can it be that she has finally found a place to call home?

The smile fades as she dwells on the man named James. The one who created for her this second life, or this living death--either way, as much as she hates to admit it, she owes her continued existence to James. And briefly she wonders if he's still out there in the world, or had he finally gone too far and embraced outside of the Traditions one time too many.

She nearly walks into a park bench before she pulls herself out of her self-imposed fog. Nearly-absently, she says, "Pardon me." The dark-skinned woman on the bench smiles as she turns to Lenore. Though her clothing is much more modern than when she last saw her, Lenore instantly recognizes her. "Child, you are a sight for sore eyes!" The woman stands, and touches Lenore's cheek. Lenore is stunned silent as she recognizes the woman as one of her childhood family's servants.

"Now, give your old Anna a proper hug!"

Lenore, almost dreamlike, steps forward and puts her arms around Anna. She steps back after a moment and is almost incapable of speech. The most she can manage, on the verge of tears, is "How...?"

Anna hugs Lenore as she would hug her own daughter, gently stroking the Gangrel's hair and whispering. "Child, I am so very glad to see you again." She squeezes Lenore once more, then holds her out at arm's length. "You've grown into a fine, lovely woman."

Tears now falling from Lenore's eyes, something she can't remember happening since she left James, she leans her face into Anna's shoulder. "I've missed you...I thought you..." She lets out a single, tear-choked laugh. "It's good to see you, cher."

Anna looks surprised, then worried as she looks around the zoo. "Lenore! You have to be careful. Let's dry those eyes. This is a time of happiness. I spent so much time trying to find you." Anna squeezes Lenore's hand. "I am so sorry I didn't tell you the truth. It wasn't until someone visited us that I put two and two together."

Grinning, for Anna hasn't changed since Lenore knew her in true life, Lenore wipes her eyes dry. She looks about, quickly. "Cher, would you mind if we took this conversation somewhere a little more private?" She tilts her head. "As happy as I am to see you...I've got questions, you know?" She squeezes Anna's hand.

Anna looks around the area, her eyes never lingering long in any one spot. "I think maybe we can sit under that gazebo over there, and be safe enough, long as we keep our voices down. Come, child, we may not have much time." She keeps Lenore's hand as she guides them toward the gazebo. Her grip is strong, but not forceful.

Lenore follows Anna. When they are seated, she leans forward and asks, "Who visited?"

As Anna leads them to the gazebo, Lenore notices the strength of her hold fading. As they sit, she takes a good, long look at Anna, and in the short time they've been together, she looks like she's aged thirty years. "Yes, child, we ain't got much time between us." She takes a deep breath, and closes her eyes. "I'll miss these nights. I'll miss those days." She opens her eyes. "But I won't miss him. That James boy that done made you what you are, Lenore. That made me help him look for you all these years."

Lenore, listening attentively, goes utterly still at the mention of James. For a moment, she seems as a statue; her eyes have gone dark with remembered pains. "He's...still around, then?"
