Miranda watched Mackenzie speak, head cocked slightly to one side; could she really be so genuinely kind? Disarmed by the understanding in the other woman's words, Miranda softened.
"I..thank you. It's," she paused, "comforting to have someone understand, to not be as alone as I had thought."
"It wasn't fate that brought me to this city," she opened her mouth as if to say more, but then stopped and swallowed, her throat clenching. Miranda shook her head and tried to smile at Mackenzie. "Thank you for coming, your company was unexpected but I welcome it, you have made me feel a little better."
