Violence Grips The Pit

by: Peter Martinez

Gunfire erupted near the Marshal Pitt projects late Saturday night as a group of what has been described by police as rival gangs converged near the corner of Joplin and Brinks street, and began moving west in a rolling gun fight.

With the Police Walk Out starting at noon on Saturday, many of Lamar's worst elements took to reclaiming the night, and the streets. One such event erupted into open violence when as many as three different gangs clashed in sudden bloodshed.

One witness told the Sun “I thought that I was in the middle of a war zone myself. It sounded so close that I didn’t dare look outside. I heard cars crashing and horrendous booming sounds. As soon as I thought it was safe, I ran to the phone and called the police. Of course, they didn’t show until it was over.”

Official police reports have raised the wounded total for this event to 17, with three casualties, most of which from gunshot wounds. Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to contact the LPD anonymous police tip line at 1-555-847-5463.
