Default Return to Springfield - Rescue of Miranda pt.2 (Walker, Miranda, Mackenzie)

      (( continued from: http://myworldofdarkness.com/colonel...on-walker.html ))

Humid night air blew through the cracked window as Emma drove down Battlefield. The irony of the name not lost on her. Her cellphone tucked between her left shoulder and left ear she listened to the third police contact of the night giving her a run down on suspect crimes including breaking into a graveyard, a knocked over bloodmobile, and three 'occult' crimes since Cocteau's arrival in Lamar.

Were they all the Sabbat? No telling... but they could be and it was some place to start. After all, the Sabbat didn't go around wearing bright orange vests with "WARNING: SABBAT MEMBER" on the back. One couldn't simply cruise a city the size of Springfield and hope to stumble upon them luckily.

Left on republic, right on golden... a steady speed, just five miles an hour above the speedlimit. She'd given Mackenzie a map to mark out the locations in which all the crimes, except the bloodmobile, happened within a dozen or so blocks of each other. Seemed likely this was their turf.

"Thanks George, you're the best, if I get this guy I'll be sure to put in a good word with my Captain for your transfer. Yea... you got it, beers at Sluggers. Say hi to the wife for me."

Looking to Ben she says, "That's another one... vicious dog attack just three weeks ago and two exsanguinated victims in the last year... I know it's a little outside of our timeline but they may fit."

Catching Mackenzie's eyes in the rear view mirror she continues, "Mackenzie check on the 500 block of south Kickapoo, Delmare, and Meadowmere. If I'm not mistaken they should all be around the University campus... if that's the case, it would appear our hunting grounds are the few miles around the University campus. That may be as close as we can narrow it down. I doubt there is going to be much left at any of the crime scenes except for the most recent."

Looking to the passenger seat, "What's it going to be archon? We got a lot of ground to canvas or we can check out the crime scene. I got some skill with Auspex and I may be able to use another talent of mine to take a look and see what intel can be gathered."

Mackenzie sat in the backseat, the map in her lap, and pen touching her lower lip until Emma would list off a new location. She would deftly mark the areas and listen carefully to the names of the streets so that once they were actually in the area, she could relate the map to the real world.

When Emma asks about the 500 block of South Kickapoo, Delmare, and Meadowmere, she looks at the map and nods grimly, looking up to meet Emma's eyes. "Yes, they are." She looks at the map trying to see any type of pattern as she listen to the Archon's response.

"Let's check out the latest scene. I'll make sure we aren't seen. If it comes to it, I can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. But I'd rather walk right up to the source than dick around all night wasting time." He takes out his phone and sends a quick text.

As Mackenzie looks to the map there is no real pattern beyond the turf which seems to be centered near the south end of campus. If this search of the warehouse did fail to show anything important at least Mackenzie could be confident in the fact that the area to search for these sons of bitches wasn't dauntingly large.

Emma parked the car outside of the storage shed that still had crime scene tape up. As she got out she went to the rear of the car without a word and popped the trunk. Smoothly she put on a police vest and two guns. After that she produced the oddest addition to her gear, a buckler with a bright white opal in it's center that shimmered in the streetlight. Rolling her head, cracking her neck, she tried to loosen up.

Closing the trunk she shifted her vision to the shadowlands and immediately gasped. Swallowing she steadied herself. Realizing she got the attention of the Archon and Mackenzie with her gasp she whispers, "The dead sometimes linger..." wetting her lips she walked past the woman with her throat torn out and her jaw removed... and tried not to think too much about how she came to be that way. "... sadly, not all of them can be of help."

Emma walks up to the door and pulls her gun. Sure, at the end of the day it would do very little to kindred and a lot of folks failed to understand why she carried them at all... but the guns weren't just a favored weapon for her or a means to destroy vampires... it was about mortals. Mortals watching, mortals who might be inside and need to be stopped without a lethal end to the conflict. She'd been trained in how to wing a man at a full run, yards away... and with her clan's talents, she could take the heart beat of time needed to aim and ensure she NEVER missed her target.

There was no urgency, only calm calculating unwavering unerring accuracy. In those silent still heartbeats, she and the machine were one and it's purpose an extention of her will made manifest. Death, damage, warning... a gun could do so much and it was only the very unimaginative kindred who failed to see that... the same sort of kindred who felt potence was a power only to hit things with and who didn't see any use for awe or entrancement in their night to night dealings.

Pushing open the door she looked inside the long dark empty space that was the storage shed. The trough was gone now, likely in police evidence lock up and so was most everything else. The place seemed like a hollow cold tomb that smelled of old blood and unclean death. Urine, likely released in fear or last moments, also tainted the stale air of the place that had been closed up during the summer heat today. The ghost of the jawless lady had followed them inside but said nothing as she could not speak without her face in tact.

Emma looked to the ghost of the thin man who had remained with her when his coworker had chosen to return with the message to Tino. "Find out if there are any other ghosts lurking in the area. Don't go too far. If you spot other vampires, return immediately. Don't make yourself known... they may be necromancers."

Waiting until the wraith had gone she looks to Archon Walker, "Not much left behind I'm afraid. We could *touch* the spot where the trough was... but I doubt we'll get more than feelings of elation and death. Could do the same for Miranda's location, she may have left behind something we can ID her from. Otherwise... break out whatever investigation skills you got folks because, it's a craps shoot we find anything."

Emma begins to look around the room for mundane evidence and waits to be instructed to use any of her powers and in what way.

Archon Walker follows Emma closely. As Mackenzie follows him, she notices that he almost completely fades from view whenever there is heavy shadow. He makes no noise as he moves. He starts to make signs with his hands, then abruptly stops.

"Mackenzie. Shift into your animal form. Take a few moments to separate the scents, and start tracking the undead ones."

Mackenzie follows them, keeping a close eye on the Archon as he fades in and out of view. When he tells her to shift she nods and her body starts to contort and shift down into her puma form. (http://riverdaughter.files.wordpress.../06/puma2.jpeg)

Once fully shifted, she takes a few moments to breathe the air, letting her animal senses takes over. She start to separate out the scents, searching only for the scent of the undead. Once she has a scent, she will stay intently focused on following it.

Almost immediately there is a scent. Many people believe that it's actual smell of a body that animals pick up, actually it's not that at all. Skin cells are constantly falling off the living and they leave a trail to be followed by animals who can do such things... this means that the average undead doesn't leave much of a trial to be found. Normally.

This one, however, had a problem... he was oozing something that smelled of rot and sewage. A nosferatu. He was going to be easy to find so long as he kept leaving droppings behind as he was.

(( stopping there to find out if you follow the trail to it's end or if you report back or whatever. ))

Mackenzie lets a barely audible growl rumble from her chest as she picks up the scent. Her golden eyes are intensely focused and her nostrils flare to track the scent. She will continue to follow it without stopping, unless the Archon halts her.

((waiting for see if there are any further instructions))

The Colonel issues a simple command: "Follow." He will Obfuscate the team and follow Mackenzie's lead. Emma will notice that he pulls a familiar-looking dagger out of his boot.

Down the streets the three of them moved. Emma tried to keep her mind off the questions that always came up before going into combat. While it was true, she was probably one of the single best warriors in the city when it came to raw talent and understanding combined with the added edge of her powers, she didn't enjoy killing... anyone.

Perhaps the Sabbat deserved it, she knew just what they'd do to any innocent they came across... she'd been educated in their dogma long ago but the thoughts lingered incessantly. Was it because she knew the origins of the Sabbat? Maybe because her sire had more than one friend on the otherside too? Not every member of the Sabbat was a crazed human hating killing machine, albiet all of them were capable of that manner of hate but, by that token wasn't she? She'd killed humans before, though she was loathe to admit it.

Did they have sires and childer outside the sabbat, if she took the time... would they turn away from the sect? What were they in their mortal lives? Did they have families still? Was she killing someone's husband, their child, their father or brother? She'd had a father and a brother both of whom were taken from her by Cainites who no doubt told themselves they were doing the right and only thing to be done. How could she justify her actions when in truth she knew it was wrong to do what she was doing? Murder ... was murder and she couldn't tell herself that she'd come here for anything but cold blooded premeditated murder. Sugar coat it as she might try with the platitudes of lives she might be saving or poor Miranda Montreve who she barely knew... she was a killer tonight and she stalked the streets with two beasts who outwardly made no bones about what had to be done.

The large cat padded down the street her soft paws counterpointed sharply by the heavy footfalls of a running Ben Walker. Emma couldn't help but recalling another time like this, not so very long ago in the way of Kindred thinking, with two other gangrel... in happier times.

"Keep focused Emma... if you can't stay focused on what you're doing the..."

"ART LOOK OUT!" Tabitha screamed out as she spun connecting her boot with the head of the creature that had fallen out of the tree and put Art hard to the ground. His thin piece of flesh between his under-arm and thigh looking like some sort of wing or webbing...

Emma opened fire into the Nosferatu who immediately obfucated and tried to fall away from Art for another attack but Art was too fast for him. The old gangrel growled as he picked up the Nosferatu and put him hard against a brick wall.

Tabitha laughed and Emma couldn't help but smirk as the other red-head spoke,"Practice what you teach Art."

Putting down the Nosferatu who had agreed to let them hunt him, as repayment of an old debt, "Yes well, now you see what can happen, yes fledgling?"

Emma nodded and stiffled her laugher.

"Let your guard down for a second on the hunt... and it could be your last so focus, you got me girl!"

      "Yes Sir, Mr. Morgan, Sir."

Emma smiled as she looked to Ben Walker beside her and then Mackenzie before her. It really was similar in a lot of ways. She missed Art, his funny anticdotes with no point... his mixed up old sayings and proverbs... his way of making a girl feel better no matter the bad shit she'd gotten herself into. Emma silently wished her brother would pay Ben a visit, just so she had an excuse to put her eyes on him again, even if it wasn't appropriate she speak to him now.

That was when she felt ...IT. Her scream began 3/4 of a second after she felt the flow diverting around an object, "LOOK OUT!" One, two, three... how many were there? She lost count of the distortions but it was clear they were out numbered and no matter who was with you, you never could be sure what the enemy had brought to bear... you had to assume the worst.

Emma's chin flew to the left as the she was jacked in the right jaw by a fist that felt as though it was a cinder block. The world slowed and she could see Mackenzie and Ben taking fighting stances surrounded by what was surely the men they hunted. They were behind the last building on a dead end street... was this their haven? Emma let her eyes scan for humans who might be watching as she turned back to her assailant... her attempt to protect the first tradition allowing the second punch that moved far slower than the last one to land true. Her fangs descended as this one impacted her stomach.

No Humans... my turn, you son of a bitch.

She could see the second and the third who had bent the flows, beyond him but, it would be too late for their friend before they would make it to his side.

"A warrior moves without thought... Emma's hand moved with purpose and to her eyes, no faster than if grabbing a shot of irish whiskey, to him... likely he and anyone else never saw her motion at all.

A warrior's motions are always made with purpose, no action wasted for florish or show. She gripped his neck with the hand of one out stretched arm. His eyes not yet showing that the thoughts of what was about to happen even were registering yet.

A warrior makes use of their most basic instruments to their best advantage. Emma fell upon the creature and tore his throat with gnashing fangs, blood flowing down her face, neck and front.

And if a warrior must use lethal force... As she pulled back she could see it now, just starting to register as he likely ran through the questions in his mind about how fast he was, how she couldn't know he was coming, of how it was impossible that she had moved faster, of how she must have elder blood of how she was the tool of his sworn enemies and...

She must kill." Chavel said flatly. ...how he would now die. Emma potently slammed his skull into the pavement again and again watching the light in his eyes fade to a dullness of torpor even as his friends began to realize the creature they were about to land into melee with. And for some reason, it didn't even occur to Emma to stop this time, the questions fading into a reason that seemed good enough for the moment. Attack me as beasts... and I shall put you down like them!

The world leapt forward then, at a terrible speed as claws emerged through her back and out her front, even through the vest. Emma coughed vitae in spite of her attempt not to. The enemy behind her hadn't used Celerity, she'd never felt him coming... never saw him... as if he'd fallen out of the sky. She never knew that when she'd finished with this one that another would be on her before the two in front of her could make it to her. She could hear his laughter and winced as he pulled out his claws and made to strike a second time with weapons so vicious they just might scar even her undead flesh.
