Maddalena enters the church quietly, greeting the priest and deacon as they greet her. She is wearing a black dress with a black half-veil over her hair and eyes, and appears to be a widow in mourning. Her face is flush as she imitates the human appearance expected. She moves to the font and dips her fingers in the holy water, making the sign of the cross.
She then moves to an empty pew on the outside, genuflects and again makes the sign of the cross. She stands and slips into the pew, then kneels on the kneeler to pray.

Casamiro arrives at the Mass dressed conservatively in all black dress shirt, slacks, and shoes. Rolling between the fingers of his right hand is the black rosary that he always carries with him.

He stops at the entryway, lowering his head before he and touches sternum, forehead, left shoulder, right shoulder, slowly and gracefully.

His eyes behold the cross and his face is somber. He looks for a seat among the pews.

**Izabella is wearing a long black dress with black heels. Her long blonde hair rests on her shoulders. She also has a long black overcoat on as she walks up the steps of the church. Her face is rosy red and she has a smile.**

"Good evening Father, I trust you are well?" She nods to his response and walks inside.

**Moving over to the holy water, she dips her fingers and makes the sign of the cross. Looking up she sees Mr. Boone and walks over to him. Kneels in the isle makes the sign of the cross again and stands.**

"Hello, Mr. Boone, may I sit with you?"

Romeo enters dressed in his usual attire, removing his sunglasses at doorway, resting his hand on the entrance for a moment and closing his eyes, His lips moving but not saying anything. He then enters the rest of the way greeting the priest and deacon, moving to the water and crossing himself before slipping into the pews among the assembled kindred and kneeling, praying in silence.

A.J. nods with a smile as Maddalena enters. He tilts his head to the side, referencing the seat beside him as a silent invitation to sit with him.

Maddalena silently moves to sit next to AJ. She gives him a small yet friendly smile but does not say a word as she settles in. Instead her eyes are focused on the cross as hundreds of thoughts fly across her face. The most common thought appears to be sorrow.

( oc: For those interested in the really cool process of the full mass, there is a nice write up on Wikipedia that I urge you to browse to have some idea of the ceremony involved. Since I'm crunched for time I'm going to skip to the sermon portion. Feel free to write reactions to this sermon as I stated at the beginning and also feel free to write about any other socializing you do after services ... and if any of the catholic characters are actually bold enough - blog your confessional!)

      ic:

Father Colburn stepped forward again and looked across the assembled. Many dressed nicely, some seeming to have just come from work. Some awake and alert while others seeming to be there as a matter of habit... or heartache, feeling it necessary to sit in the presence of a voice of God to balm their spiritual wounds and give them direction again.

"There is a natural revulsion to suffering in us all." Father Colburn began with a voice as clear as crystal. "No one likes pain or irritation. Our natural inclination is to avoid suffering at all costs. What a lot of weeping there is in the world! If we could gather it in one place it would fill a sea, a great ocean. We are not free from physical and mental handicaps, sickness, poverty, worries, anxieties, the death of those dear to us, failure in the examination, frustrations of daily living, monotony, boredom, misunderstanding, calumny etc. Some of them only last a while while others constantly bother us."

"Many troubles are of our own imagination and remain only at the level of imagination. Some sufferings are of our own making. A student wastes a lot of time and as a result fails in the examination But there are other sufferings, which we think we don’t deserve. We are unable to comprehend the mystery. Why didn’t God make Herod die before he could carry out the slaughter in Bethlehem because Jesus was a thorn in his side? Does this God exist or not? If he exists why doesn’t He act?. To know from experience that God can do all things and what he chooses to do is to let you suffer is really very painful."

"Among all the prophets, Jeremiah closely resembled Christ in his sufferings. His whole life was a long drawn out martyrdom. A man of peace and gentle nature, he had to be continually at war with his own people. It was a torture of soul. He loved his country. Yet he was considered a traitor by his own people. He hates what he has to say to his people but he is compelled by God to say it. No one can be a prophet unless he is ready to suffer."

"Even though he is the Messiah and may be because he is the messiah Jesus has to undergo humiliations, sufferings and violent death. Peter was elated to be praised by the Lord as he acknowledged him as the messiah. But then he fails to understand him as the crucified and suffering Messiah. Peter the rock becomes the stumbling block. Hence the rebuke of the Lord “Get behind me, Satan". Inspired by the Holy Spirit he acknowledged him as the messiah. And continuing the work of Satan who wanted to sidetrack our Lord from doing the will of the Father, Peter dissuades him from the cross. “Get away” the Lord said to Satan. Peter was not supposed to lead Jesus. Peter’s duty was to go behind i.e. to follow the master and not to lead the master. Having silenced Peter, Jesus tells his disciples that he expected them to imitate him and to be ready to suffer any hardship."

"What is our attitude to sufferings? An early solution was to attribute suffering to personal sin. It is an inadequate solution since even the just man encounters evil."

"Another solution is to look upon suffering as an educating punishment. Our inability to get to the truth except by bitter experience is terrible. Once we have been betrayed by someone, we begin to realize how we have betrayed others. When we have been ignored while sick we begin to behave more sympathetically towards the sick. It was hunger that converted the prodigal son."

"Yet another explanation is that when God is going to do something wonderful, he always begins with a difficulty. You are the block, God is the sculptor. You cannot know what he is cutting you for and you never will in this life. All you want is patience, trust, confidence, and he does it all."

"Before becoming a statue you will have to receive many blow ... A Good man is like tea-leaf: His real strength comes out when he is in hot water. God permits evil so as to transform it into a greater good, grace. We know God cannot deceive us and this is our strength. A parent does not desert the child. A friend does not betray a friend. If pain is there in this world, He knows how to transform it into freedom, light and bliss."

"Finally, the problem of suffering will be solved by the person of Christ. We will be compensated at the glory of resurrection. If the kingdom of eternal life exists, suffering and deaths have meaning. If it does not exist, there is no explanation at all. We have his assurance that we will never be tried beyond our strength. In other words, his helping hand is always there to share our load."

"Tonight ... I came here prepared to give another sermon. It was a fine sermon, in my estimation but, the Lord spoke to my heart as many of you shook my hand. I realized that tonight was unique in some way and that perhaps, as I see so many new faces in the crowd, this would be the only chance I had to reach people who were in great need of this message or would be very soon."

"A few years ago, a man of our perish relayed this tale to me. He was going through a crisis. His ... little daughter who was paralyzed had been sitting in her chair as he entered the house with a package for his wife. Giving his daughter a big kiss he asked, 'Where is Mother?" ... "Upstairs," She replied ... "Well, I have something for her" ... "Let me carry it to Mother" said the daughter ... "Why, my dear, how can YOU carry this package? You cannot carry yourself?" With a big smile, the child replied, "Oh no Papa, but if you give it to me, then I will carry the packages and you can carry me".

Father Colburn looked out into the crowd and as he does so, he meets your eyes specifically and says, "God spoke softly to his heart that this was his own position. He was carrying his burden, but wasn’t the Lord also carrying him?"

Father Colburn pauses then. There is a heaviness to the silence as he continues to hold your gaze and he says with a voice that let's you know he IS speaking to you. That somehow, some way, this man seems to understand something about what's happening or going to happen very soon in your life and his voice gives you comfort and reassurance (oc: all characters in this scene regain full willpower.), "We need to suffer for others ...and for God!"

"What return shall I make to God for all He has done for me? The return God wants is the sacrifice of our lives to him just as he sacrificed his life for us."

"I close tonight with the words of St. Francis of Assis, 'Lord Jesus, two graces I ask of you before I die: first, to feel in soul and body, as far as is possible, the pain that you sweet Jesus, bore in the hour of your most bitter passion; second, to feel in my heart, as far as is possible that extraordinary Love with which you, son of God, were so inflamed as willingly to endure so great a passion for us sinners. ... Teach me Lord why I suffer, how to suffer, and be with me while I suffer! Mother Mary, Help us to share your son’s sufferings as intimately as you shared.”
